The programme
is financed by the EU Regional Development Directorate-General
(ERDF Innovative Actions 2000 - 2006, Programme 2001 GR
16 0 PP 209) and its mission is to develop innovative
actions on the North Aegean islands. The specific goal
of Action 7.6 "Innovative Olive Mill Waste Management
Systems" is to set up pilot waste management systems
on a number of olive mills in the North Aegean Region,
ultimately aimed at defining integrated solutions to the
olive mill waste management problem. These solutions shall
take into account the specificities of each individual
olive mill and tap on existing knowledge available of
the technologies that have already been tested on the
global scale, while aiming to test innovative techniques
and strategies.
The term "integrated" means that emphasis
will be placed both on the production process that "produces"
the waste in question, thus on minimizing the amount of
waste that is produced, as well as the treatment of the
waste produced. Thus, we stress that the aim is not to
find the one and only solution to the waste management
problem, since the optimal solution in each case is most
probably dependent on the specificities of the particular
olive mill (e.g. varying degrees of land availability,
different production capacities etc.).
Furthermore emphasis is placed on:
- The re-use of the waste or waste components (waste
as a resource)
- The use of natural waste treatment systems
- Simple construction and operation of the waste treatment
systems
So that the solutions are:
- Economically viable
- Technically feasible
- Socially accepted
Action 7.6 of NAIAS is a 440.000 EURO project (approx.
150.000.000 Drch) for construction works and operation
costs subsidizing 50% of the set up costs of the OMWM
pilot plants to be constructed on the olive mill sites
of the businesses that participate. In other words,
olive mill businesses (whether private of co-operative)
that wish to participate must contribute to the construction
costs of the pilot plant by 50%.
We underline that candidates for the participation
in an individual action within the programme are olive
mill owners. Co-operation with private companies and
institutions who provide relative technologies (e.g.
decanter manufacturers) and know how is possible.
