11.
Device for the heating of samples which are used for the
determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD Reactor,
Model 45600-18).
The device was purchased from Hach company. It has 25-well incubator for 16
x
100 mm
vials. There is the possibility of adjusting the
incubation temperature at a range of 100 to 155 ˚C.
The device has also a timer switch from 0-120 minutes
with audible alarm and automatic shut-off. However it
can operate infinitely and to use the audible alarm for
notice. The device was brought with a modular
thermometer (0-200 ˚C) appropriate for the device.
Also reagents for the determination of COD concentration
ranging from 0-1500 and 0-15000 ppm.

be connected with a computer or a printer for the
transfer of the data. Reagents for the determination of
the concentration of phenols, cloride ions, nitrates,
ammonium ions, total phosphorus and potassium ions were
purchased which are specially adjusted for
determinations with the spectrophotometer.
13.
System for the determination of anaerobic and aerobic
metabolism of microorganisms in soil and in aquatic
solutions.
All the equipment was purchased from Acualytic company. The methods which
are used are based on the determination of the relative
pressure due to the anaerobic or aerobic respiration
where exhange of gases takes place. The determinations
are made with the help of electronic sensors of pressure
(electronic manometers, model Sensor-IR) which are
screwed on the measurement bottles. These sensors accept
and send out the pressure data through infra-red
radiation to a mobile controller, model Sensomat-Scientific
AL350. The data can be stored in this controller, or
they can be sent to the computer or to the printer with
the appropriate cable and programme which are included.
A. System for the determination of the biological oxygen demand
concentration (BOD):
The system is consisted of 12 dark BOD bottles of 500 ml, 12 pressure
sensors (Sensor-IR), an magnetic stirring base for 12
BOD bottles (model AL322) and a thermostatically
controlled cabinet (model AL185) of 180l volume and
temperature adjustment range from 4 to 40 ˚C. The
cabinet and the pressure sensors are also used from the
systems described below.
B. System for the analysis of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism:
The system consists of 6 bottles DURAN GL45/25 of 1000 ml, a magnetic
stirring base for 6 bottles (model AL353). At the
anaerobic metabolism it is possible to quantify the
produced biogas and the substrate conversion.
Furthermore many other results can be optained such as
the toxicity of the substrate, the efficiency of
fermenters, the optimum conditions of cultivation. The
same results can be optained at the analyses of aerobic
metabolism. Process successions from aerobic to
anaerobic or vice versa can also be quantified.
C. System for the analysis of microbial respiration of the soil (and other
substates):
Τhis system consists of 6 bottles (Measurement Vessels) of 1000 ml, a
magnetic stirring base for 6 bottles (model AL353). The
method is the same with the analysis of aerobic
metabolism reported in the previous paragraph, the only
difference is that different kind of bottles are used.
Here also various results can be optained such as the
respiration of microorganisms (and bigger organisms, e.g.
worms) which are fed with the substrate (e.g. soil,
compost, sludge), the biodegradability testing of
substances (pesticides, fertilizers, chemicals), the
toxicity of substances.
